I'm a leader in the global size-inclusive fitness movement that is shifting the narrative around how people in larger bodies are perceived in the world of athletics. I believe in creating a culture of equal opportunity, and that starts with bringing the voices of the invisible majority to the table.
This is My Story
Prior to becoming a fitness professional, I was a talent agent in the world of professional advertising. I was responsible for sourcing, hiring, and managing the people you would see on the front covers of fashion magazines. The biggest irony of this job is that there was no sense of diversity or body positivity, just a bunch of painfully "perfect" people who shaped the way that billions of people felt about their bodies when they looked into the mirror - myself included.
I wanted to lose some weight, so I did what most people would normally do - I joined a local running club. I didn't know this was the turning point where I would meet the person who changed my life. This person was my running lead. She was the first person I had ever met who was in a larger body that WASN'T trying to lose weight. She was gunning for her dreams in the body that she had, and she had no desire to change the way she looked...which completely blew my mind.
After training with her for 12 weeks, my mindset shifted from wanting to lose weight to focusing on improving my athletic performance. Meanwhile, my job became less and less palatable...to the point where I quit altogether.
That was when I started up my first business, "Body Exchange." It was the first plus-size fitness chain in Canada that promoted the message that women don't have to conform to this "perfect body image" that is portrayed in the media. Thousands of women’s lives were changed by going through the programs that were run across our 7 locations.
Twelve years later, I can confidently say that the women I worked with in my boot camps were my biggest teachers. They inspired me to write my first book, “Big Fit Girl” in March of 2017, which became the spark that ignited a global conversation about size-inclusivity.
I received numerous international inquiries about my work, and I toured the world to share my message and listen to the stories of countless other women who were struggling with the exact same thing.
This experience opened my eyes to the fact that women all over the world are struggling with their body image and sense of self-worth. I kept hearing the same story over and over again about how women in larger bodies are afraid of pursuing athletics because of the messages they’re receiving from the media, the big brands, and even their peers.
From that point onwards, I’ve made it my mission to rewrite this social narrative. In 2020, I wrote my second book, “Fitness for Everyone”, and launched the Size Inclusive Training Academy (SITA) in 2021.
Today, I continue to change the landscape of the fitness industry by coaching women on the ground-level as well as working with big brands to create a culture of equal opportunity in the athletics space. Change won’t happen overnight, but I believe that it starts one conversation at a time.
